Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
