Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
