The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
