Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's decision was the potential of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
